Intent Based Advertising | MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is at a turning point in its digital journey. While connectivity has become the backbone of education, commerce, and daily life, the country still lags behind its Asian neighbors in the critical infrastructure needed to meet the demands of over 113 million mobile users.

As of 2025, the Philippines operates fewer than 38,000 cell sites, far below the estimated 50,000 sites required to serve its population. In comparison, Indonesia has over 121,000 towers, Vietnam around 90,000, and even Myanmar has surpassed the Philippines in tower density. This gap directly impacts the speed, reach, and reliability of mobile and internet services nationwide.

Globe’s Commitment to Closing the Gap

Despite these challenges, Globe Telecom continues to lead efforts in expanding and modernizing the nation’s digital backbone. The company’s mobile network now covers 96.13% of the Philippine population, connecting over 106 million Filipinos, though about 4.2 million remain outside coverage.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, Globe rolled out 487 new towers, upgraded nearly 4,000 sites with LTE, and activated 235 new 5G sites. Today, its 5G network supports more than 9.5 million devices across the country.

Globe has also prioritized reaching Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs). To date, 600 operational sites are already live, with a target of 700 by the end of 2025. Industry-wide, telcos plan to build over 1,000 new towers in GIDAs between 2025 and 2028 to ensure inclusive connectivity.

“Every tower we build brings Filipinos closer to opportunity, better education, stronger businesses, and more connected communities,” said Carl Cruz, Globe President and CEO. “Expanding our network is how we ensure the Philippines stays competitive in Asia’s digital future.”

Strong Investments Driving Growth

To sustain these efforts, Globe invested ₱56.2 billion in 2024, with the majority of funds directed toward network expansion and technology upgrades. These investments underline the company’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and keeping pace with regional advancements.

Overcoming Challenges in Infrastructure Expansion

While progress is evident, challenges remain. Lengthy permitting processes, difficulties in site acquisition, and varying local government restrictions continue to slow down tower construction. Globe has called for streamlined regulatory processes and stronger public-private collaboration to accelerate deployment.

Staying Competitive in Asia’s Digital Economy

Asia’s digital race underscores the importance of strong infrastructure. With every new tower, the Philippines strengthens its digital foundation—enabling students to participate in online learning, empowering small businesses to connect with broader markets, and keeping families united across the archipelago.

Globe’s expansion initiatives reflect the scale of investment and innovation needed to close the connectivity gap. By increasing tower density and enhancing service reliability, the Philippines can position itself as a stronger competitor in Asia’s fast-evolving digital economy.

“Our mission goes beyond connectivity,” Cruz added. “It’s about building a digital nation where every Filipino has access to opportunities and a better quality of life.”

About Globe

Globe Telecom is a leading full-service telecommunications company in the Philippines committed to creating a digital ecosystem that connects people, businesses, and communities. Its ongoing investments in network expansion, 5G innovation, and inclusive connectivity support the country’s vision of becoming a competitive digital economy in Asia.
